Federal Aboriginal Forestry Initiative (AFI)

Through the efforts of Canada in providing funding, the Aboriginal Forestry Initiative (AFI-FNESS) assisted eligible First Nations Communities with enhancing forestry business management capacity and operations. The AFI-FNESS project specifically helped to fill the existing gap in the development of the community wildfire protection prescriptions for on-reserve lands not eligible under the provincial (SWPI). As well, AFI-FNESS assisted the First Nations currently participating in the Provincial SWPI with meeting their contribution requirements (25%) to complete their fuel management prescriptions for adjacent off-reserve (Crown lands). Participation in the provincial Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative (SWPI), which addresses the wildfire threats and risks to First Nations communities and to their forest assets and to public safety, was a requirement.

Continued funding for AFI is currently under development.
